Not too long ago, there was time when all the vehicles an automaker’s portfolio weren’t required wear the same uniform. Each model could be its own unique expression the brand’s strengths without being forced schedule an appointment with the corporate plastic surgeon. Granted, some marques lost bit identity with scads mismatched children running around the lot, the world’s automotive variety pack was considerably more interesting. If you didn’t like the face one product, wanted stick with the brand, there were plethora options choose from.
That’s not case anymore. We live in a world increasingly unified automotive design, and while that’s resulted in a few products missing mark in a big way (we’re looking at you, Acura), just as many manufacturers have created some real winners spreading corporate face among its progeny. Dodge’s decision share the Ram grille across its line was one the best moves the company has made in recent history, Ford Chevrolet have similarly benefited strong familial design cues.
Now Mercedes-Benz looking walk down same path spreading its upright grille 2011 R-Class. The move isn’t so much a shot in arm as a shot espresso Silver Arrow’s awkward duckling, it should help luxury people mover blend in amongst its more beautiful brethren.
