The El Toro Marine base Irvine, CA has seen its fair share automobiles. The open runways playground sports cars, any given day, you can find high performance driving schools or testing sessions utilizing vast expanse pavement. This week, however, El Toro was receiving end something very, very different. Rhys Millen rest his crew have been hard at work over last six months creating monster an automobile built just one thing – win Pikes Peak Hill Climb. They have brought out car, dubbed Hyundai Genesis PM580, test tune session ahead race day June 27.
El Toro seems an unlikely place test car that will be making an ascent up 14,000 foot mountain, Rhys told us it’s actually quite ideal. The runways offer nearly identical amounts of traction as the paved portions of the mountain course, provide more realistic feedback than the smooth surface of racetrack.
While this might sound like an opportunity for serious hoonage, Millen camp is all business. Their mission is simple: climb Pikes Peak in less than ten minutes. The team knows that everything has perfect if they are going achieve their goal, so their preparation is methodical and meticulous. Many have tried break ten minute mark in past twenty or so years, and while many come close – very close – none have been able do it. However, after spending day with Millen and his crew, we think he’s got potential do it if anyone can. Make jump find out why.
